- The death of Abraham and Marie left only one child at his majority and that was Roger Samuel Lee. The other Lee children, being minors, were put under guardianship of their grandmother Marie Henrie, who was residing in St. Louis. Here they stayed until their majority or entered upon their own lives. Roger S. Lee enlisted in the military at the age of 19 in 1866 just a year before his mother?s death and married 1870 in Buchanan County, Missouri.
- Roger Samuel Lee (son of Abraham and Marie Josephine Lee, grandson of Marie and William Henrie) was born in 1847 in Prairie du Rocher, Randolph Co., Illinois to Abraham and Josephine (Henrie) Lee. Here he was educated and learned milling. At the age of 19 he entered the military from St. Louis and from that point was more or less on his own. He set out for the territories after this period of time trying his hand at pioneering in Iowa as his father owned land there. After not being successful he found a home and work as a farm hand with a Mr. John K. Johnson in Buchanan Co., Missouri. He was so removed from his family that only through diligent searching by special agents was he found and given the heartbreaking news of the deaths of both his mother and father. Unknown to Roger was that his father had come into a great fortune, by the purchase of one lottery ticket for the Crosby Opera House in Chicago. The inheritance was waiting for him in St. Louis.
While working on Mr. John K. Johnson?s farm Johnson?s daughter Martha caught his eye and they were married February 20, 1870. Martha A. Johnson is the daughter of Mr. John K and Mary E. (Stephens) Johnson of Buchanan Co., Missouri. Mr. Johnson (Roger?s father-in-law) is the son of Samuel Johnson.
Roger and Martha (Johnson) Lee soon moved to Andrew County, Missouri, residing in the small town of Avenue City, Missouri where the first of their children was born. Altogether Roger and Martha had at least 5 children. Sadly Martha died suddenly on February 16, 1883 in Jefferson Twp., Andrew Co., and Missouri and is buried in the local cemetery. Roger managed to raise these children for the next five years but by the late 1880?s the children are known to be orphaned. The last record of Roger alive is in 1888. The Johnsons (Roger?s in-laws) finished raising the minor children of Roger and Martha Lee.
